A man has been arrested in connection with last week’s shooting in Kirkdale.
Loud bangs were heard in the Fountains Road area on July 12 as shots were fired in the direction of a car.
Detectives investigating the case will question a 28-year-old man who has been detained on suspicion of possession of a firearm and discharge of a firearm.
Four warrants were granted to search properties in the Kirkdale area early on Thursday morning and remain ongoing.
Detective Chief Superintendent Chris Green said: “The arrests today follow a brazen, audacious and reckless incident, which took place in the Stanley Road/Fountains Road area of Kirkdale just over a week ago.
“Having viewed dashcam footage of the incident there is no doubt in my mind that ordinary members of the public who were going about their own business were put at significant risk and we’re fortunate that an innocent member of the public wasn’t hurt.
“In the last week detectives have been working hard to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We are appealing for help in tracing two cars which we believe were involved in the incident – a dark coloured Volvo which may have damage to the rear window, which we believe was caused as a result of the discharge, and a silver Kia Sportage.
“We would ask anyone who saw the vehicles that night or has seen either of the vehicles since to get in touch.”
He added: “Merseyside Police is committed to tackling those involved in gun crime and will not tolerate the use of firearms on our streets.
“The dashcam footage of this incident brings home the dangers that these people present on our streets. The incident on Stanley Road took place at 5.35pm at night, in broad daylight, during rush hour.
“There are a number of cars stopped in traffic and the footage shows a car being driven down the pavement to avoid the traffic, shortly before gun shots are heard. The footage shows a number of males, who are believed to have shot at the car running away.
“These people didn’t care about anyone else who was in the vicinity and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area who may have any information which could help us to build up an evidential picture and put those responsible behind bars to contact us.
“We do not, and will not, let these kinds of individuals cause fear in our communities. In recent weeks we have recovered several firearms – the latest firearm was seized in Kirkby on Wednesday night – and we have made significant arrests in connection with firearms offences.
“We need to keep the pressure on these individuals and we need the help of our communities to take these people off our streets and put them behind bars.
“There will be people locally who know who was involved in this incident and I would ask them to think about the untold damage and grief that could have been caused by these individuals.”
