Wirral woman takes on voluntary walk in memory of her mum

Wirral resident Sheilagh Kernaghan is taking on a 10k walk to raise money for cancer research in memory of her mother.

25-year-old Sheilagh lost her mother to cancer in July 2015 and has since volunteered for Maggie’s Merseyside and raised money in her mum’s memory.

Kernaghan participated in Maggie’s 10k Culture Crawl last year to raise funds and is preparing to take part again in this year’s crawl that has a new route.

Greasby resident Sheilagh, said: “I was at University when my mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I was 300 miles away from home studying in Canterbury. I was away from my family and my long-term partner so it was quite a lonely experience. My parents told me to stay at University so I found support with Maggie’s Centres online.

“My mum was only 50 when she passed away and that’s something that I can’t change but Maggie’s has helped me to change things for other people. For the past eighteen months or so, I have been helping Holly, the lovely Fundraising Manager at Maggie’s Merseyside with all-things-digital. Together, we have been able to raise awareness of Maggie’s and what it does for people. People get in touch to say that in the middle of all of the chaos that cancer brings, Maggie’s has been a place of solace for them.

“I think the Culture Crawl is a really positive way to raise money for people affected by cancer. I helped to organise the event last year so I know how much effort the team puts into making it a special event for people. It’s suitable for people of all ages and there really are cultural delights around every corner. It’s a whirlwind adventure and I’m really looking forward to doing it again this year.”

The 10k Culture Crawl takes place at 6:30pm on Friday September 29, giving walkers exclusive after-hours access to iconic landmarks across Liverpool.
