Everton FC stepping up Wayne Rooney pursuit

Everton are stepping up efforts to make Wayne Rooney their sixth summer signing.

Ronald Koeman has turned his attention to securing the Manchester United captain’s services as the Blues’ transfer revolution continues apace.

Burnley’s Michael Keane and Malaga striker Sandro Ramirez became the latest additions of Koeman’s squad makeover for a combined £35.2 million on Monday.

Rooney revealed in May that he is set to make a decision on his future as the forward’s prospects with Old Trafford appearing increasingly limited.

MLS side LA Galaxy are among those expressing interest in the five-time Premier League winner, who is now in the final 12 months of his existing contract.

But a return to Goodison Park appears the most viable option for the England international, who left his boyhood club for United in summer 2004.

However Everton still face hurdles in their pursuit of Rooney, with the Times claiming that a compromise will need to be reached on his £250,000 per week salary.

Jose Mourinho is keen to retain the 31-year-old, United’s all-time record goal scorer, in his plans for next season despite a reduced amount of playing time.

A move to Everton could still be realised with the Red Devils’ plans to land want-away striker Romelu Lukaku being mooted as part of Rooney’s potential sale.

The Croxteth-born player will report back for pre-season training later this week ahead of United’s tour of the United States, which will depart on Sunday.
