Klaassen takes Everton FC spending to £53m in a day

Everton have announced Davy Klaassen as their latest summer recruit.

A £23.6 million fee has been agreed with Ajax that sees Klaassen become the second addition of Ronald Koeman’s Blues revolution.

That deal heralded an unprecedented Thursday in which Everton had spent over a combined £53m.

Koeman already broke the club’s transfer record with Jordan Pickford’s £30m arrival heralding what promises to be the busiest period in Goodison Park history.

And the Everton manager has wasted little time in finalising a deal for Klaassen.

With Ross Barkley yet to commit his long-term future, the 24-year-old is seen as a successor to the Wavertree-born player, who still faces a possible summer exit.

Klaassen lifted three Eredivisie titles with Ajax and captained the club for the previous two seasons, leading them to the Europa League final in the latter.

A five-year contract has been agreed for the playmaker, who admits that discussions with Koeman were key in his decision to move to Merseyside.

He said: “I spoke a few weeks ago with Ronald Koeman about Everton.

“I wanted to come here and check if this was the right club for me and since I came here I feel so happy. It’s a great club.

“The moment that I spoke with the manager directly I got a good feeling.

“He’s an honest guy, we talked about the club, about the way he wants to play and that gave me a positive feeling.

“I talked to him about the club and everything we want to achieve and he was really positive.

“It’s difficult to leave Ajax but I think this is a good step for me now and I’m really looking forward to my time here.”
