Ronald Koeman has outlined Ross Barkley’s evolving role in his Everton side.
Barkley was involved in two of the Blues’ three goals in Saturday’s comfortable win over West Brom as his current form continues on an upward trajectory.
An England recall now appears likely for the midfielder after he shone at Goodison Park in front of Gareth Southgate for a second successive home outing.
Koeman previously challenged Barkley during an inconsistent start to the season but the Everton manager is now effusive in his praise for the Wavertree-born player.
He said: “I think he’s changing his style.
“I don’t need Ross on the halfway line to have eight touches on the ball. We have defenders and midfield players.
“We need players like Ross between the lines and close to the box taking shots, to have assists. That’s one of his big qualities.
“The boy is so strong and so good on the ball, his shooting left and right. He’s clever. He sees chances.
“Look to the third goal, he knew to make the assist to Romelu Lukaku – that’s what we need.
“We need good players like him in front of the ball.”
