Everton FC set to step up Wayne Rooney pursuit

Everton will aim to re-sign Wayne Rooney after failing with a loan approach in January.

A homecoming for the Manchester United and England captain appears increasingly likely following admissions from several Blues officials this week.

Ronald Koeman claimed that Rooney was one of a handful of players that would make the club ‘stronger’ if he were to return to Goodison Park this summer.

Director of Football Steve Walsh echoed the Everton manager’s comments, insisting that ‘for us to not be interested in him would be wrong.’

Koeman previously made no secret of his willingness to accommodate Rooney in his plans when questioned about a potential return for the Croxteth-born striker.

The 31-year-old currently finds himself out of favour at Old Trafford after falling behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the club’s pecking order this season.

But despite Everton’s attempts to lure him back to Merseyside on loan in the previous transfer window, United resisted the approach from his former club.

Last week Rooney ruled out moving to the Chinese Super League in order to remain in the Premier League, which offered Koeman fresh hope ahead of this summer.
