Koeman coy on Wayne Rooney’s Everton FC return

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has downplayed Wayne Rooney’s potential return to the club.

Rooney faces the prospect of leaving Manchester United this summer after the England international fell out of favour under Jose Mourinho this season.

A prospective homecoming with the Blues has long been mooted for the Red Devils captain, 31, despite interest from across Europe and the Chinese Super League.

Koeman previously opened the door for Rooney to rejoin the ranks at Goodison Park but insists that discussions about the prospect are premature.

He said: “I think it’s not the moment now to talk about what will happen, or what we need, or what we like for next season.

“We just finished the transfer window and let’s talk about football.

“Let’s talk about [Everton’s game with] Sunderland.”
