Everton FC secure record-breaking January transfer

Everton have made Ademola Lookman their first signing of the January transfer window.

An initial £7.5 million deal was agreed with Charlton Athletic for the winger, who has put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year deal with the Blues this afternoon.

Add-ons could see the figure rise to in the region of £11 million despite the deal already making Lookman the most expensive League One player of all-time.

The 19-year-old had earned rave reviews since breaking into Charlton’s first team last season and admits that playing for Ronald Koeman was a driving factor.

He said: “As soon as I heard about Everton’s interest I knew this would be the right place for me.

“Everton has a big history and I was also attracted by the manager.

“When you look at what he did at Southampton, and what he does with young players in terms of developing them, that was a big attraction.

“It was great playing in The Championship last season and for the last six months in League One but I feel like I’m ready to make the step up to the Premier League.”

Koeman admits that he is hopeful Lookman can continue his meteoric rise by proving he can adapt to life at Goodison Park.

“It’s a good signing. We need that kind of player,” said the Everton manager.

“He’s 19 and we expect a lot from the boy.

“The boy played in Charlton and it’s a different level compared to the Premier League.

“I think the boy needs time to adapt to the way how we train and how we play.”
