Koeman: Lukaku deal a ‘big part’ of Everton FC’s future

Ronald Koeman believes that Romelu Lukaku’s impending new contract is a ‘big deal’ for Everton’s long-term project.

Earlier this week Lukaku’s agent Mino Raiola revealed that the striker was close to pledging his future to Goodison Park by penning on an improved deal.

A host of European clubs have been linked with moves for the Belgium international despite the Everton hierarchy resisting all attempts last summer.

But Koeman admits that Lukaku’s renewed commitment is a clear sign that the Blues are moving in the right direction in retaining their key playing assets.

He said: “I know that in talks together about a new contract but if it’s 90 per cent, 99 per cent [close], I need to believe his agent.

“It’s a big deal and that’s what the club is showing – to keep its best players and do everything to keep them because that’s the future.

“Of course you don’t know in football what can happen in one year but at least there’s an understanding and the boy likes to stay.

“He’s a big part of the Everton future.”
