Katarina Johnson-Thompson has won gold in the Commonwealth Games heptathlon.
The 25-year-old scooped her first major outdoor title by finishing fourth in Friday’s 800 metres to finish 122 points ahead of Canada’s Nina Schultz.
Halewood-born Johnson-Thompson had led after the first day and went 31cm clear in the long jump in the games on the Gold Coast of Australia.
She appeared in visible distress after reaching the finish line in the 800m with a time of 2min 21.24sec.
“It was the emotion and the pain,” said Johnson-Thompson.
“Just after the 200m [at the end of day one] I could feel something and it worsened in the long jump. I just managed it and got through it.
“I thought it was under control until 300m into the 800m.
“I felt it worsen. I thought about stopping and just carried on.”
