Tony Bellew’s dream of fighting for a world title at the home of his beloved Everton FC has moved a step closer after Goodison Park was granted a boxing license.
The Daily Mail reports that the Blues submitted an application to host the fight to Liverpool City Council last week, which has since been accepted by the city’s local authority.
Lifelong Everton supporter Bellew will face off with Congolese fighter Ilunga Makabu for the vacant WBC cruiserweight title, with Sunday, May 29th specified as the provisional date for the bout in the application.
Talks between club officials, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn and prospective broadcaster Sky Sports are believed to be in advanced stages, with the 33-year-old today taking to social media to give his fans an exciting new update.
Speaking to Sky Sports News last week, Bellew said: “The club want it to happen. I want it to happen. Eddie Hearn wants it to happen.
“There are a few other people that need to give it the seal of approval but it has had the seal of approval from the most important people and that is what matters.
“It would be the dream so the dream would be achieved and that is the best way of putting it.
It’s so close now people! We can almost touch it! #GoodisonPark👊

“I’ve been a world champion and I have fought and defended my title at Goodison Park but that was all make-believe for the movie so I want to do it for real now and I believe I can.”
