Joe Gomez admits that his Liverpool future is clouded in uncertainty.
Gomez is the longest-serving current player at Anfield and enters his 12th season with the club this summer, having won eight major honours since arriving in 2015.
The versatile defender has struggled with injuries during his time with the Reds but has made 21 appearances in all competitions to date in the current campaign.
However Gomez is approaching the final 12 months of his existing deal and faces a battle for a regular first-team spot with competition growing in the defensive ranks.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has another year to run on his current contract while centre-back partner Ibrahima Konate continues to make steps towards a renewal.
Giovanni Leoni arrived last summer before suffering a season-ending knee injury while highly-rated French youth international Jeremy Jacquet will join this summer.
Gomez will be free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with non-English clubs from January, when he could become the fourth defensive stalwart exit in three years.
AC Milan were among a host of clubs pushing to the 28-year-old before Arne Slot’s side failed to get a deal for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi over the line.
“I think anything can happen. I don’t know is the honest answer,” admitted Gomez.
“I’ve only got a year left so I don’t know but whatever is meant to be will be, I guess.
“But I’m so grateful to have had this time here at this club. I’ll always be grateful to have had 11 years at a place like this.
“All I can do is be thankful and we’ll see.”
