Former Liverpool goalkeeping coach dies

Former Liverpool goalkeeping coach Jose Manuel Ochotorena has died.

Ochotorena was part of the Anfield backroom staff for three years at the start of Rafael Benitez’s tenure as the club won the Champions League and FA Cup.

The former Spain international left the Reds following the arrival of Xavi Valero, who returned to the reigning Premier League champions this summer.

He also had two spells with Valencia, the first during Benitez’s time with the club, in addition to a 13-year stretch with his national team which ended in 2021.

Ochotorena’s links with La Roja coincided with their most successful period in which the country won two European Championships and a first-ever World Cup.

News of the 64-year-old’s death was confirmed on Monday with both Valencia and Real Madrid, another of his former clubs, among those to pay tribute.

In a statement, Liverpool stated it was ‘saddened’ by news of his passing.
