Van Dijk warns Liverpool against complacency

Virgil van Dijk insists Liverpool will not be taking the Carabao Cup for granted.

Wednesday’s third round visit of West Ham will see Arne Slot’s side begin their defence of the trophy they won for a record tenth time last season.

The Reds’ head coach is expected to ring the changes with his new charges now fighting on four competitive fronts with quick weekly turnarounds.

But Van Dijk has warned that there will be no half-measures from the players who feature in the Anfield midweek encounter with a struggling Hammers.

He said: “The thing is we play so many games – [calling it] weaker teams I’m not sure that’s the case but we try to rotate and give other players an opportunity.

“But if you go with the mindset ‘Ah, here we go again…’ then obviously you should not come and support.

“Everyone who turns up on Wednesday will have to know we will give everything we have to go through.

“The guys who start and the guys who come on will fight for every trophy and competition we are going to participate in.

Whether we can be successful, we will see at the end of the road but on Wednesday we will give everything we have.

“West Ham are a tough opponent and will make it different for us.”

Van Dijk claimed his first trophy as Liverpool captain in last season’s final with Chelsea after scoring in extra time; something he admits is an abiding memory.

“It was a proud day for me personally, my family, wife and kids who were with me throughout,” added the defender.

“A fantastic evening and something I will definitely remember for the rest of my life.”
