Alexander-Arnold: Salah criticisms are unfair

Trent Alexander-Arnold believes criticisms of Mohamed Salah are ‘unfair’.

Salah has scored just once in his last 10 games for Liverpool and failed to find the net in six successive outings, including last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final.

The Egypt international’s recent struggles in front of goal are in stark contrast to a prolific return of 27 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions prior to it.

But Alexander-Arnold feels Salah, who remains the Premier League’s leading scorer, is being unfairly judged due to his impressive haul for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

He said: “I think it’s unfair on him, to be honest.

“The levels he’s set for himself, he’s kind of a victim of his own success at the minute.

“He’s still the Premier League top goal scorer, I think he’s one behind me in assists and people are saying he’s having a bad run of form.

“I think he’s nearly the top goal scorer in the Champions League as well.

“All he’s done for us over the last four, five seasons has been outstanding and it’s unfair to say that he’s going through a bad patch.

“Because we have full belief that he’s going to score goals for us and it’s only a matter of time before he hits the back of the net again.”

Liverpool will face Chelsea in next month’s FA Cup final after seeing off their Premier League title rivals Manchester City in Saturday’s other last-four clash.

Alexander-Arnold admits the recent meeting with Pep Guardiola’s side less than a week earlier helped develop a more effective approach at Wembley.

“I think you need to learn from previous games and I think when you play a team six days apart you can learn a lot of things,” added the England international.

“We decided to drop off a little step further, obviously still play a high line, but not give them that opportunity to play in behind us as much as they would have wanted – and it worked a treat for us.

“We pressed them high, won the ball back when we lost it and, in that first half especially, I don’t think I’ve really known a team to run over Man City like we did.”
