Liverpool reached the FA Cup final with a 3-2 win over Manchester City.
Ibrahima Konate put Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead after barely 10 minutes played at Wembley with a headed effort from Andy Robertson’s corner.
The Reds’ lead became doubled less than seven minutes later when Sadio Mane slid to block a poor goal-line clearance by City goalkeeper Zack Steffen.
On the stroke of half time, Mane further ramped up the advantage through a well-taken volley from Thiago Alcantara’s dinked pass across the penalty area.
But City struck back early in the second half and reduced their deficit inside two minutes when Jack Grealish produced a sweeping close-range finish.
A nervy finale ensued after Alisson pushed an effort from Riyad Mahrez across to the far post, where Bernardo Silva bundled home another late reducer.
Sunday’s other semi-final between Chelsea and Crystal Palace will decide who Liverpool face in the showpiece of the world’s most famous cup competition.
Here were the key talking points from Wembley:
The Quadruple is officially on
Jurgen Klopp might not admit it but Liverpool took a huge step towards an unprecedented quadruple by eliminating Manchester City here at Wembley.
One point separates these North West rivals in the Premier League table, yet the first-half display could not be more different to their most recent meeting.
The Reds relentlessly pressed their counterparts to such lengths that errors became more pronounced, typified by Zack Steffen’s moment of madness.
It became a more even-sided contest after the interval, yet Pep Guardiola’s side remained second best in spite of scoring a small handful of reducers.
May 14 may be the date firmly ingrained in Kopites’ minds after their team booked a third outing of the season at their unofficial base of Anfield South.
But Liverpool look increasingly well-placed to sweep all before them by the time this remarkable season is brought to an end sometime in late May.
Never before has Klopp’s adage of ‘just go for it’ rang truer than right now.
Thiago enjoys Wembley redemption
It was the image which cast a cloud over Liverpool’s Carabao Cup triumph
Thiago Alcantara sat on the substitutes bench tearfully looking out onto the Wembley turf, knowing that he would play not part in that final with Chelsea.
An injury during the warm-up had forced the Spain international to miss out on a pivotal role in the first leg of what could be a potential four-trophy haul.
Back in the national stadium again, however, Thiago made up for that lost opportunity by producing an all-encompassing display in the engine room.
No pass was too complex and no tackle too difficult as he pulled the midfield strings in typically effortless fashion, but the best was still yet to come.
A smart spot of link-up play with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the stroke of half-time culminated in Thiago assisting Sadio Mane with a perfectly flighted ball.
His celebrations for the Senegalese’s strike, and indeed Liverpool’s other two goals, were full-bodied catharsis; redemption for a previously lost opportunity.
Konate continuing a Reds’ trend
Liverpool defenders scoring regularly has been anything but an anomaly.
In the days when Anfield was the master of all it surveyed, players from the backline would leave their post to make a mark at the other end of the pitch.
Perhaps it is a sign of things to come that Ibrahima Konate is following in that particular trend after opening the scoring in the opening stages against City.
Before a summer switch to Merseyside, the 22-year-old had scored only four times in his professional career with Sochaux and RB Leipzig respectively.
He has now scored in each of his last three games for Liverpool; adding another headed effort to the two across Champions League legs with Benfica.
More than attacking prowess, though, brings Konate in line with some of his illustrious peers as another composed display alongside Virgil van Dijk attests.
It may be a while before the pair are being mentioned in the same breath as Hansen and Lawrenson, Thompson and Hughes or Hyypia and Carragher.
Yet Konate showcases all the qualities for another comprehensive double act.
