Klopp fires warning on Kelleher’s Anfield future

Jurgen Klopp has warned that Liverpool are not considering parting with Caoimhin Kelleher.

Kelleher’s stock as Anfield’s second-choice goalkeeper is expected to rise after his heroics throughout last weekend’s Carabao Cup final victory over Chelsea.

The Republic of Ireland has been used sporadically by the Reds, with two of his eight appearances throughout this season coming in the Premier League.

But Klopp is adamant that there are currently no plans to allow Kelleher to leave the confines of his first-team setup for the foreseeable future.

He said: “There’s absolutely no intention to sell him or give him a loan because we need a strong no.2.

“Winning a trophy, will that help? You have to ask Caoimhin that, but he has a long-term contract here and we have a long-term plan with him.

“Of course we want to help the boy as well become the best version of himself. That’s what we did so far. That’s what we will do [long-term ]as well.

“Maybe there’s a year when he has to go on loan, I’m not sure if that will be next year or maybe a year later. He is already in a good way.

“Really we have to judge that situation. Adrian is still here, doing an increidlbe job. so we will see.

“But you need the quality we have here and if he gets weaker, if he wants to go somewhere, then we don’t have the chance to do that.

“If you can keep the quality then we could talk but that’s it.”

Kelleher had been expected to make back-to-back appearances as Liverpool prepare to entertain Norwich City in Wednesday’s FA Cup fifth round tie.

However Klopp insists that the 23-year-old will not feature for his side in their first appearance since triumphing in the penalty shootout at Wembley.

“He’s used to the situation,” added the Liverpool manager.

“He just comes on and plays. He’s not used to 120 minutes and being the hero.

“There’s no need to stress the situation so no, he will not start.”
