Pep Lijnders has urged Liverpool to believe in reaching the Carabao Cup final.

Thursday’s semi-final with Arsenal is finely poised after the Reds drew a blank in their home leg despite playing the majority of the game against 10 men.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had not been held to a goalless draw in front of their home crowd since their Champions League stalemate with Bayern Munich.

But Lijnders implored his charges to draw inspiration from that instead of being despondent as they aim to book their place at Wembley next month.

He said: “We need optimism in our squad because this semi-final is decided over two legs.

“It’s half time. Whether it’s 0-0 or 2-2, it’s the same especially because there are no away goals.

“We proved already a lot of times that with a 0-0 at home. Against Bayern Munich [in 2019], we went there and did the things we did.

“We know what we are capable of. We know what we want.

“In football there are always two games: one is the scoreboard and the second is your identity, your style. The scoreboard, you can draw [or] you can lose.

“But the second one, you can never, never lose. You always should try to continue with this process. That’s what we’re doing because it brought us success.

“We go to Arsenal to put our game into place; to Arsenal to attack with and without the ball. That’s what we want.

“We are Liverpool Football Club and our team proved that we want to attack this competition and reach finals.

“Now we are here in the semi-final, we can reach Wembley and we should try with everything we have to reach it.

“The journey for the fans to London to prepare a final, that’s what this club is all about.

“I said it before: as a Liverpool player, we won at lot but if you want to become a true legend, you need to go for the national cups as well.”
