Liverpool have collected ‘substantial evidence’ after a fan allegedly spat at Manchester City’s coaching staff.
A complaint was lodged by the Premier League champions following events in the second half of last weekend’s 2-2 draw between the teams at Anfield.
It is believed a member of City’s backroom team used a mobile phone camera to document the incident, which took place in the Main Stand dugout area.
Anfield chiefs confirmed on Monday that they are in ongoing dialogue with their North West counterparts to ascertain the full details of what occurred.
They also revealed that the evidence could be passed on to Merseyside Police due to deliberately spitting carrying potential criminal charges of assault.
A club statement read: “We are conducting a full investigation, working with all relevant parties including Manchester City, to gather evidence from individuals who witnessed the incident as well as analysing all available video footage.
“The evidence collected to date is substantial and, if requested to do so, will be handed to Merseyside Police given the potential for criminal charges.
“Anfield is our home and we will ensure it is a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone attending and will not allow unacceptable isolated behaviour to impact on our club’s values and principles.”
Pep Guardiola backed Liverpool to take affirmative action against the alleged perpetrator when asked about the incident in the immediate aftermath.
He said: “I didn’t see it [at the time].
“I heard about it, the people told me and if this happened I’m pretty sure Liverpool FC is going to take a measure about this person.
“Liverpool is greater than this behaviour. At every club there are people that make bad actions because of emotion.
“You have to control yourself.”
