Liverpool ‘got lucky’ with Andy Robertson’s injury

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool ‘got lucky’ with Andy Robertson’s ankle injury.

Robertson confirmed on Monday that he sustained ligament damage when trying to stop a cross during last weekend’s pre-season friendly against Athletic Club.

However the Scotland international revealed on Twitter that a scan on the problem ‘suggests nothing too major’, allying fears of a long-term lay off.

Speaking after the Reds’ 3-1 win over Osasuna in their final pre-season friendly, Klopp admitted that Robertson’s prognosis is more promising than initially feared.

He said: “I think we got lucky.

“It could have been much worse. It will not be too long.

“I’m not sure if it will be before the international break or after it.

“But as I say, I think we got lucky.”

Robertson’s understudy Kostas Tsimikas is expected to fill the void at left-back for Liverpool’s Premier League opener with Norwich City on Saturday evening.

The Greek defender featured for Klopp’s side as Roberto Firmino notched a first-half brace on his return to the squad after Takumi Minamino opened the scoring.

Ibrahima Konate also faced Osasuna in a game which doubled as a tribute to Michael Robinson, who represented both clubs, following his death last year.
