Liverpool condemn Real Madrid bus attack

Liverpool have condemned fans who vandalised Real Madrid’s team coach.

Various items were thrown in the direction of the Spanish giants’ vehicle as it approached Anfield for Wednesday’s Champions League quarter final clash.

An estimated 400 home supporters defied social distancing protocols to line the route to the stadium in support of Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead of the tie.

It is understood that a bottle penetrated one of the reinforced windows on Real’s bus as it made the final stage of its journey down Anfield Road.

Responding to the unprovoked attack, the Reds were quick to condemn those aiming missles and vowed to work with efforts to identify the perpetrators.

“We condemn unequivocally the actions that led to Real Madrid’s team bus being damaged during its arrival to Anfield this evening,” said a club spokesperson.

“It is totally unacceptable and shameful behaviour of a few individuals. We sincerely apologise to our visitors for any distress caused.

“We will work together with Merseyside Police to establish the facts and identify those responsible.”

Merseyside Police have also confirmed they have launched an investigation into the incident while urging anyone with potential information to come forward.

Chief Superintendent Zoe Thornton said: “As with all matches, we have worked very closely with both clubs to ensure the safety of the public and the teams themselves.

“The disgraceful behaviour of those involved this evening is extremely disappointing and totally unacceptable. Such incidents will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

“A dedicated investigation team will be reviewing CCTV footage from the area, along with our own body worn camera footage, and working closely with the club to identify those responsible.

“I would also ask anyone who was in the area and captured mobile phone video footage of the incident to please get in touch.”
