Liverpool will face Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter finals.
The reigning English and Spanish champions last faced off in the 2018 final of Europe’s elite competition with Los Blancos running out 3-1 winners in Kiev.
It was the second showpiece meeting between the teams since their original match-up in May 1981, when Alan Kennedy scored the winning goal in Paris.
Previously, they did battle at the 2014/15 group stage, with the Reds losing both encounters against Carlo Ancelotti’s side, 3-0 and 1-0 respectively.
Liverpool ran out comprehensive 5-0 aggregate winners over their La Liga counterparts in the 2008/09 last-16 under Rafael Benitez’s title hopefuls.
Should Jurgen Klopp’s side edge past Real, they are set to be pitted against the winner of the other quarter final tie between Porto and Chelsea.
The first leg will be played at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano on April 6 with the return fixture taking place at Anfield in the following week on April 14.
“It’s exciting, exciting,” admitted Klopp.
“It’s obviously a tough draw but I am fine with it because if you look at all the other teams you think, ‘Oh my god’ because they are all strong and all have quality, that’s clear.
“I am really looking forward to the games. It’s only just over two years ago that we faced them and it was a tough night for us, so to get the chance to play them again is cool.
“I know it’s a different round and whatever and we don’t know where we will play and stuff like this, but that’s all OK. If it will be Budapest, that’s fine.
“We are fine with that. The home game maybe hopefully at Anfield, that would be great as well.”
