Liverpool have appointed Andreas Schlumberger as their new head of recovery and performance.
The newly-created position will see the 54-year-old again linking up with Jurgen Klopp, having worked under him for four years at Borussia Dortmund.
Dr Schlumberger spent time working at Bundesliga mainstays Bayern Munich, Schalke and Borussia Monchengladbach after leaving Signal Iduna Park.
He has also supported the German football association at youth level prior to taking up residence in the Premier League champions’ backroom setup.
It is believed that Schlumberger’s appointment will be as replacement to outgoing medical rehabilitation and performance manager Philipp Jacobsen.
Liverpool saw a high turnover in medical staff during 2020 with club doctor Andy Massey and three physios among those accepting positions elsewhere.
Separately, the club has suffered myriad injuries during the current campaign due to a convoluted match schedule caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Diogo Jota and Kostas Tsimikas are all long-term absences while Naby Keita is set to miss Wednesday’s trip to Newcastle.
Klopp will make a late fitness call on whether Thiago Alcantara is included in the squad while doubts remain over Joel Matip’s availability for the match.
Matip suffered an adductor muscle problem midway through the second half of last Sunday’s 1-1 eventual draw with West Bromwich Albion at Anfield.
