Klopp explains Keita’s latest absence

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita has suffered another injury setback.

The Guinea international was absent from the Premier League champions’ 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday due to a muscle issue.

Keita is now set to also sit out the trip to Newcastle United, taking his games missed to 35 in all competitions since joining the Reds in summer 2018.

Jurgen Klopp admits that he is unable to put a time frame on when the midfield enforce will be back in action following his latest fitness relapse.

“He felt a muscle again,” said the Liverpool manager.

“I don’t know exactly how long [it will be]

“But he was not ready for today and not for Wednesday, I think. We will see.”

Klopp saw Liverpool’s defensive issues potentially mounting after Joel Matip limped out early in the second half of the stalemate with the Baggies.

Matip remains the club’s sole available senior centre-back with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both currently sidelined with long-term knee injuries.

The Cameroonian was replaced by Rhys Williams, one of three established defenders to feature for Liverpool this season from their academy ranks.

“Joel told me he felt something in his adductor and that’s obviously not too good,” added Klopp.

“I am not sure how serious it is now, but it was serious enough that he had to leave the pitch.

“The rest of the information I will get [from the medical staff] tomorrow.”
