Liverpool set a new club record with a comfortable 3-0 win over Leicester City.
Foxes defender Jonny Evans headed the ball into his own net from a James Milner corner on 22 minutes while attempting to shackle Sadio Mane.
Diogo Jota doubled the Reds’ advantage shortly before half time by rounding off a superb move by glancing home Andy Robertson’s cross with a header.
A third followed for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the 85th minute as Roberto Firmino ended a four-game goal drought as he converted another Milner corner.
Here were the key talking points from Anfield:
Patchwork Reds still flying high
No one can argue that Liverpool’s title defence has been easy so far.
Injuries have taken such a toll on the Premier League champions that their defensive line-up against Leicester City could be described as patchwork.
With James Milner filling in at right-back and Fabinho returning as an auxiliary centre-half alongside Joel Matip, the Reds were down to their bare bones.
Milner’s stand-in role, in place of a sidelined Trent Alexander-Arnold, was undoubtedly among the highlights in the win over Brendan Rodgers’ side.
He rarely put a foot wrong when coming up against the previously high-flying Foxes’ forward line spearheaded by a similarly evergreen Jamie Vardy.
If any good has come from Anfield’s recent treatment table woes, it is Jurgen Klopp’s ability to find effective solutions within his squad of all talents.
Anfield ushers in its immortals
Immortality has always beckoned for this current Liverpool side.
As the first team to win the Premier League in 30 years, their place in history was already assured but now have a feat in the records book to match.
No team has had the beating of Klopp’s charges for 64 top-flight games at Anfield, a run which stretches back to a loss against Crystal Palace in 2017.
Sam Allardyce’s tactical masterstroke ultimately strengthened his hosts’ resolve to a point where they never looked like losing any of the ensuing game.
Away form is clearly an Achilles heel, as some of this season’s more surprising results have shown, but Liverpool’s invincibility at Anfield knows no bounds.
Robertson the master creator
Mounting injuries have seen Andy Robertson become Liverpool’s last man standing in defence, however he is an outlier on more than fitness alone.
Such is the Scotland captain’s influence that legitimate fears would join his backline cohorts during the recent international break were fully justified.
Robertson again proved a driving force against Leicester by chalking up a third assist of the season as he teed up Diogo Jota in the 41st minute.
No other defender in Europe’s top five leagues has now produced more domestic assists since the 26-year-old’s £8 million move from Hull City.
That statistic underlined why Robertson staying injury-free is as imperative as his fellow defenders returning to the fold when it is safe for them to do so.
Alisson delivers perfect Clem tribute
Ray Clemence’s recent passing generated a plethora of tributes at Anfield.
Before kick-off, Alisson led the commemorations by wearing a replica of the ex-goalkeeper’s iconic green jersey before placing it behind The Kop’s net.
The Brazilian extended that homage to Clemence in the game itself by producing a clean sheet through repelling the visitors’ sporadic attempts.
Seasoned match goers remember the former England stopper as an integral component in Liverpool’s all-conquering team of the late 1970s and early 80s.
Rarely was he troubled but could be counted upon when it counted. Alisson had similarly little to face against the Foxes yet remained a safe pair of hands.
Liverpool’s greatest-ever no.1 would have approved of this performance.
