Community Shield to be played without fans

Liverpool’s Community Shield clash with Arsenal will be played without fans.

The August 29 showdown between Jurgen Klopp’s side and FA Cup holders Arsenal was set to be a test event for the return of supporters at matches.

Games in England and indeed across world football have been played behind closed doors following the outbreak of coronavirus earlier this year.

Plans to reintegrate fans to stadiums had been mooted by the UK government ahead of the new Premier League season beginning on September 12.

However the Football Association confirmed on Wednesday that the season’s traditional curtain-raiser will take place without any supporters inside Wembley.

The Premier League champions’ meeting with the Gunners will be preceded at the national stadium by the first women’s Community Shield since 2008.

WSL winners Chelsea and FA Cup holders Manchester City are set to face off at 12.30pm on August 29 with Liverpool’s game taking place at 4.30pm.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said: “We are proud to announce the first-ever double header of The FA’s Community Shield at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 29 August.

“It’s a sign of our commitment to the women’s game and its growth, to have a curtain-raiser that mirrors that of the men, with another high-profile fixture at Wembley Stadium.”

The game marks Liverpool’s second consecutive Community Shield appearance, having lost last year’s game with City in a penalty shoot-out.
