Liverpool have won the Premier League title for the 2019/20 season.
Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on Thursday meant that the Reds’ 30-year wait to become champions of England again was finally ended.
Jurgen Klopp’s side hold a 25-point lead over their nearest challengers, who are also their next opposition at the Etihad Stadium in seven days’ time.
The Reds’ players celebrated their triumph just over 12 months since winning the Champions League following City’s loss at a Merseyside hotel.
Hundreds of jubilant supporters gathered outside Anfield and celebrated their club’s long-awaited success with a combination of chants and pyrotechnics.
Liverpool’s quest to end their domestic drought had been held up by the coronavirus outbreak, which placed football on hold for over three months.
Captain Jordan Henderson admitted that he was overcome with emotion at confirmation of an end to Liverpool’s wait to win the title since 1990.
“I didn’t want to talk about it until this moment so it’s amazing to finally get over the line,” he told Sky Sports.
“I’m so happy for all the boys, the fans, the whole club, the city and I’m just a little bit overwhelmed right now. So proud of what we’ve achieved.
“Obviously, when we won the Champions League on the pitch there’s different emotions and it was a different experience watching the game and then the final whistle going and being able to be with everyone was amazing and another moment in our lives that we’ll never forget.
“I’m just lost for words at the minute – it hasn’t really sunk in.
“You never really think of this end moment, you’re always just concentrating on each game and then when this moment comes I can’t really describe it.”
