Liverpool’s Man City trip given Etihad go-ahead

Liverpool have been given the go-ahead to face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Next week’s showdown could see Jurgen Klopp’s side crowned Premier League champions for the first time with a win over their North West rivals.

The game’s setting had been clouded in uncertainty with national police chiefs considering relocating it to a neutral venue due to the Reds’ impending title win.

But a meeting of Manchester City Council’s safety advisory group confirmed that the behind closed doors match will go ahead as planned at the Etihad.

Emergency services, local police chiefs and supporters’ groups were present for the discussion which was unanimously passed on Thursday morning.

Should Pep Guardiola’s side fail to beat Chelsea in their next match, Liverpool will be crowned champions for a first time since 1990 without kicking a ball.

It also means that City will need to form a guard of honour for the team that they beat to the title little more than 12 months ago in the 2018/19 season.

Klopp admitted on Tuesday it was his preference for the game to take place at the Etihad due to the upheaval that an alternative would cause both sides.

He said: “I would prefer that it’s in Manchester, otherwise it would be really difficult to organise it.

“I don’t know exactly how it will be, but it will not be in Liverpool, which means we have to go somewhere where we both need a hotel, probably.

“We don’t know how to organise it, that’s a little bit of an issue. But apart from that, we play where people send us. We have no influence on that.

“I would prefer that it’s in Manchester, obviously, but I don’t know about the process exactly.

“I’ll wait until it’s confirmed that it’s in Manchester or not, and if not, where it will be.

“But as I said, it would be a challenge for both clubs now.”
