Liverpool chief still hopeful of title parade

Liverpool are hopeful of holding a Premier League victory parade once safe to do so.

Jurgen Klopp’s side still sit just two victories away from their first title since 1990 as football makes its staggered return from the coronavirus pandemic.

Plans for a procession through the city were put on hold following March’s outbreak of Covid-19 and is unlikely to be resurrected in the near future.

A ban on mass gatherings mean a repeat of the scenes that saw half a million mark the 2019 Champions League triumph will not be happening this summer.

But Reds chairman Tom Werner has outlined plans to celebrate the eventual title win in full once restrictions are eased by the Government in due course.

“We hope at some point, people will be able to sit next to each other and enjoy the experience of a sporting event, but that seems like a long way off at the moment,” Werner told Associated Press.

“I thought I never could imagine experiencing anything like that [Champions League parade]. Then somebody said: ‘Well, if we win the Premier League, this parade will be dwarfed.’

“So, I am looking forward to a parade sometime when we can all congregate because I know how important that means to all of our supporters.”

Liverpool’s final nine Premier League matches are set to be played behind closed doors once an agreed return date is reached between all clubs.

Reflecting on the unfamiliar position that the world finds itself in, Werner admits that recent events have put football’s importance into perspective.

He added: “It’s a terrible situation we’re all in.

“Someday, hopefully, there will be a vaccine and we can return to the joy of being in a stadium and watching the elegant play of great football players.

“The most important thing is safety and the Premier League are working on protocols. But there’s a hole in so many people’s lives. Football is central to their dreams and their hopes.

“Certainly, as regards to Liverpool, we are playing magnificent football and we are just a couple of matches away from winning the trophy.

“But I do put it in perspective.”
