Loris Karius set to make Liverpool return

Out-of-favour goalkeeper Loris Karius is on the verge of return to Liverpool.

Karius joined Besiktas on a two-season loan in 2018 with the option of the deal becoming permanent at the end of the current campaign for £7.25m.

The German stopper fell out of favour at Anfield following an error-strewn display during the Reds’ 2018 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

But Karius could be linking up with the runaway Premier League leaders again this summer amid an ongoing dispute with Besiktas over unpaid wages.

He has filed a motion with FIFA to terminate his contract at the Turkish Super Lig side after receiving no salary since the league was suspended last month.

Karius previously lodged a complaint to world football’s governing body about Besiktas over a four-month period without pay near the end of last season.

Although that dispute was eventually resolved, the Istanbul-based outfit are prepared to grant his request over the outstanding amount of £400,000.

The 26-year-old’s existing Liverpool deal is set to expire in 2022 but his first-team prospects will remain slim upon his scheduled return on June 30.

Alisson Becker has taken Karius’ place as first-choice goalkeeper while Adrian, Caoimhín Kelleher and Andy Lonergan are ahead of him in the pecking order.

Karius recently revealed that he received death threats following the Champions League defeat to Real, in which he had suffered a concussion.
