Ex-Liverpool boss wants season completed

Gerard Houllier wants the Premier League season to be completed to see Liverpool’s title hoodoo broken.

The Reds stood on the cusp of ending a 30-year wait to be crowned English champions before the coronavirus led to football being curtailed worldwide.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were just two wins away from clinching their first domestic crown since 1990 when the Covid-19 pandemic struck last month.

Clubs are still discussing how best to finish the 2019/20 calendar with the prospect of games going behind closed doors appearing the likely outcome.

Houllier spent six years at Anfield between 1998 and 2004, presiding over the club’s modern rebirth and leading them to six major trophies during that time.

And the French coach is hoping he will be able to see his former employers clinch a long-awaited title triumph once it is safe for matches to resume.

“I hope they will restart the competition, because Liverpool are just two wins away from a very long-awaited and deserved title,” Houllier told TalkSport.

“I would be very disappointed if the season ends now.

“Too many times have Liverpool finished second, so now they really deserve it – even last year they finished with 97 points with one defeat.

“Even if we play games behind closed doors, there will be great frustration for Liverpool fans.

“But I can’t see them not being out in the street anyway just waiting for the players, so maybe it’s better to let them in the stadium.”
