Liverpool’s PFA award hat-trick in jeopardy

Liverpool’s hopes of scooping a hat-trick of PFA awards is now under threat.

Several members of Jurgen Klopp’s side had been in contention to claim this season’s Player of the Year award after winning it for the previous two years.

The Reds dominated the accolade with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk both crowned by their fellow professionals in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Jordan Henderson appeared the favourite to claim the accolade after a starring role in Liverpool’s runaway Premier League title challenge this term.

Anfield teammate Sadio Mane was also a contender while Trent Alexander-Arnold had been expected to contest the Young Player of the Year award.

But the PFA’s decision to suspend voting for Player of the Year due to coronavirus has plunged it into uncertainty for the first time in its history.

A gala dinner due to take place on April 26 in Manchester, the first time the event has been staged outside London, have been indefinitely postponed.

With social distancing measures expected to remain in effect beyond the UK’s current lockdown, there is no indications whether it will actually be held.

Complicating the process is the fact that not all of the 92 English clubs eligible to vote have received their allocated ballots, which were sent out in March.

The award has been a staple of the end of season calendar since its inception in 1973/74 and was previously won by no fewer than eight Liverpool players.
