Van Dijk fears winning title in empty stadium

Virgil van Dijk fears Liverpool’s Premier League title will be won without fans present.

The Reds stand just two wins away from ending a 30-year domestic drought but have been temporarily halted by football’s suspension due to coronavirus.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently scheduled to return to action against Manchester City on April 4, when the English top flight is set to resume

But it is likely that games will be played behind closed doors with the Government expected to limit public gatherings to 500 people on Monday.

That would mean Liverpool’s Premier League triumph could take place without any of their supporters present to witness it in-person.

“If we won it in an empty stadium and the fans weren’t there, I’d be gutted for them,” admitted Van Dijk.

“Obviously, if there are no fans at Anfield, then it will be a bit of a blow – no one wants to play games without the fans.

“Until a decision is made on how we go on from here, then we just have to deal with it.

“But when it happens, we are still bringing the title to our fans, definitely.”
