Klopp rejects Liverpool complacency claims

Jurgen Klopp has rejected claims Liverpool have become complacent in their Premier League run-in.

The runaway leaders head into Saturday’s game at Watford with a 22-point advantage over nearest challengers and reigning champions Manchester City.

But the Reds needed to come from behind against West Ham on Monday night to extend their current unbeaten stretch to 44 consecutive matches.

It was the first time since November’s late win over Aston Villa that the champions-elect have needed to overturn a league deficit this season.

They headed into the Anfield clash after being forced to tough it out against Norwich City and slumping to a Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid.

Klopp, however, insists that his players are not resting on their laurels.

He said: “I thought actually, when I watched it back, that being 2-1 down helped us a little bit because after that a lot of things were different.

“It was the 51st minute or so when we conceded so it was clear the game is not over. There were a lot more minutes to go.

“I didn’t know it was the first time since Villa, but the boys reacted well and that’s the only thing we have to know.

“It doesn’t mean we want to go one goal down again to get started. It was just a situation on that day.

“Some people used the word complacency, that they saw glimpses of that. I didn’t see that at all.

“It’s a long season and the concentration level can drop from time to time in all teams, in games and between games.

“How much the boys fight for a result is exceptional. There is no fear about anything.

“But we also don’t take it for granted that there will just be one or two goals up.”
