Curtis Jones will become Liverpool’s youngest-ever captain on Tuesday.
Jones was named skipper for the Reds’ FA Cup fourth round replay with Shrewsbury, breaking a record which has stood for over 120 years.
At 19 years and five days old, the Toxteth-born midfielder is set to surpass the landmark set by Alex Raisbeck, aged 20 years and 250 days, in 1900.
The teenager has made seven appearances in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season, including two Premier League substitute outings.
He has scored in successive FA Cup rounds for the European champions this season, netting against Everton and in the original 2-2 draw with Shrewsbury.
Jones also converted the decisive penalty for his boyhood club in October’s Carabao Cup shoot-out victory over Arsenal.
Separately, Neil Critchley named the youngest-ever starting line-up in Anfield history against the League One side with 22 senior players sitting out the tie.
Jurgen Klopp delegated responsibility to Liverpool’s under-23 coach with his first-team squad resting up as part of the Premier League’s winter break.
