Klopp urges Liverpool to ‘land on the moon’

Jurgen Klopp wants Liverpool to break new ground in the Club World Cup final.

Saturday’s showpiece with Flamengo will be the Reds’ fourth attempt at becoming world champions, having lost to the Brazilian side back in 1981.

History is against the reigning European champions with only two English teams winning the competition compared to their opposite number’s 10.

But Klopp has issued a rallying call to his Liverpool players ahead of the clash in Qatar’s Khalifa Stadium, comparing the feat to the 1969 moon landing.

He said: “I don’t know how you approach something that has never been done before – it is like landing on the moon.

“We are playing against a side from a country and continent where this competition means everything to everyone and, in England, we have to explain why we come here.

“That’s how Europe looks at the world, that we are the centre of attention.

“Flamengo got sent here from their country with a clear order: win it and come back as heroes. We got told: stay at home and play the Carabao Cup.

“That’s a massive difference, and we cannot change that, but we are here and my team wants to win the competition.”
