Former Everton striker Fred Pickering has passed away at the age of 78.
Pickering broke the British transfer record when he sealed an £85,000 move to Goodison Park from hometown club Blackburn Rovers in March 1964.
During a three-year stay with the Blues, he scored 70 goals in 115 appearances and recorded a hat-trick on his debut against Nottingham Forest.
He proved an influential figure as Harry Catterick’s side lifted the 1966 FA Cup, scoring in every round before injury prevented him featuring in the semi-final.
Mike Trebilcock replaced his prolific teammate and went on to score a brace in the final as Everton reversed a two-goal deficit against Sheffield Wednesday.
Pickering joined Birmingham City the following summer before sandwiching a return to Blackburn between spells at Blackpool and Brighton & Hove Albion.
