Everton investigating ‘racist’ Yerry Mina chant

Everton are probing an alleged racist chant about defender Yerry Mina.

Video footage emerged on social media of supporters singing about the Colombia international during the Blues’ defeat to Manchester City last weekend.

The chant included racial stereotypes about Mina, who has become a popular figure since completing a £27.2 million switch from Barcelona last summer.

Working alongside anti-racism group Kick It Out, Goodison Park chiefs have vowed to maintain a ‘zero tolerance’ approach towards racism in its investigation.

“Everton Football Club is aware of the video posted on social media by an unaffiliated supporters’ club,” read a club statement.

“We are in contact with Kick It Out and are working with them to investigate the matter further.

“Everton has a zero-tolerance stance towards any form of racism.”

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s visit of Tottenham, Everton manager Marco Silva insisted that Mina has not been affected by news of the alleged chanting.

He said: “We as a club, and in sport and life as well, it’s something we have to put out of our lives. Football is a party for everyone to enjoy and be part of.

“As a club, we want every type of racism out. Our fans love our players, they love Mina and they respect all the nationalities that have been signed.

“I didn’t speak with him about the situation. It doesn’t change anything in Yerry, he is a happy boy. He loves to be in our club. He loves to help us every day.”
