Ruby Walsh weighs up his Grand National options

Veteran Irish jockey Ruby Walsh is yet to decide which of trainer Willie Mullins’ horses he will ride in Saturday’s Crabbies Grand National.

Walsh is a two time winner of the world’s most famous steeplechase, winning on Papillon in 2000 and Hedgehunter in 2005, however he has played down his chances of a third victory.

“They (Mullins’ horses) are five longs shots, and any of them, on their best day, could run a big race, but whether their best days are behind them or not now is questionable.”

Walsh added that he does have his pick of all of Mullins’ horses, including Ballycasey, Turban, Boston Bob, Sir Des Champs and On His Own, although he admitted the last two are likely to be ridden by other jockeys.

Trainer Mullins has a number of other horses in races during the Grand National four day event and Walsh believes that any win would represent a fantastic achievement.

“He’s a brilliant trainer and a gentleman to work for and it would be a massive achievement, but he’s very good at putting his horses in the right races.”
