Police help Liverpool shoppers avoid Christmas fraud

Shoppers in Liverpool will be offered advice in how to avoid falling foul of fraudsters in the run-up to Christmas.

Officers from Merseyside Police are set to be on hand to help members of the public in Liverpool One this week from Tuesday, November 15 until to Saturday, November 19

They will be giving out advice about all aspects of fraud, how to avoid being a victim of fraud and how to report fraud should you be a victim.

They will also be speaking to shop assistants in a number of city centre stores and giving them advice on how to identify suspect or counterfeit credit cards.

Detective Sergeant Paul Kay said: “The run up to Christmas is a very busy time and shops and businesses around Liverpool One shopping centre will see thousands of people coming through their doors and money spent at the tills.

“We want people to be able to do their shopping with peace of mind and know that they are doing all they can to keep their bank accounts safe.

“Our advice to shoppers is to be vigilant when using ATM machines, be careful when you are using free public wi-fi and don’t give your payment card details to unknown sources over the telephone.

“The best way to spot a counterfeit counter credit card is the quality of the card and its hologram. Also, be wary of UK payment cards that do not have a chip and pin facility.

“Anyone who thinks they have been a victim of fraud or is worried and wants advice can speak to officers during the week.

“People can also report fraud via the website www.actionfraud.police.uk, by calling 101 or the confidential Crimestoppers line anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
