Museum of Liverpool to close for two months

The Museum of Liverpool will be temporarily closing its doors next month.

Bosses at the waterfront attraction have taken the decision to close for business from December 31 until the end of February for ‘essential internal works’.

Repairing to issues affecting both the interior and exterior of the Mann Island building are expected to be undertaken during the two-month hiatus.

The steps and terraces which were the subject of a High Court battle with architects AEW in 2013 will form a large part of the renovation process.

Both the terraces and steps have been out of use since the museum originally opened in 2011, to the cost of £72 million.

David Fleming, director of National Museums Liverpool, said: “We have considered the timing of this closure carefully to minimise disruption as much as possible, and will be carrying out the works during our least busy time for visitors.

“The closure is to ensure the safety and security of both the collections and our visitors, while internal works take place.”
