Backlash over Liverpool’s River of Light Festival

Liverpool’s River of Light Festival suffered an immediate backlash to their Bonfire Night display.

Thousands of families braved the cold to turn out for the event on the city’s waterfront but were left underwhelmed on both sides of the River Mersey.

A number of local firework displays were postponed by Liverpool City Council in order to ensure the River of Light was given maximum exposure on November 5.

But Merseyside residents refused to hold back as they took to social media en masse to vent their frustration at the event.

Click Liverpool reader Andy Roberts said: “It was absolute garbage.

“Considering that’s the best they could do after cancelling all local ones, it’s a sad state of affairs.”

Hundreds took to Twitter to express their disappointment while the official Facebook page for the event, set up by the organisers, was also inundated.

Complaints included the poor acoustics of the music to which the fireworks were set as well as logistical issues surrounding facilities such as inaccessible public toilets and poor parking.

Joanne McEnroe said: “What a huge disappointment!

“No atmosphere whatsoever and nothing happening down by Princes Dock.

“No countdown and no music, fireworks good but no excitement whatsoever. Far too windy and open at the waterfront for the little ones.

“We left early along with many others. Traffic horrendous getting home! Took over an hour to go one mile. Never again! Should have left the displays in the park.

“Sadly if this is the future of Liverpool’s fireworks displays I and my family won’t be attending again.”
