A murder investigation has been launched after a man was fatally shot in Aigburth.
The incident happened at around 10.20pm on Monday night when the victim was found lying on Southwood Road with multiple gunshot wounds.
A man in his 30s suffered injuries to his head, thigh and buttock, and was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead a short time after.
Southwood Road and Bryanston Road were cordoned off as detectives carried out CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries.
Patrols have been stepped up in the area to provide immediate reassurance to the local community.
Trains will not be stopping at St Michaels station, close to where the incident took place.
Superintendent Jonathon Davies said: “Our enquiries are clearly at a very early stage, although it does appear that this was a targeted incident.
“I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the shooting, or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around this time, to call us so we can find those responsible and put them before the courts.
“We will not tolerate the use of firearms on the streets of Merseyside and are relentless in our efforts to bring those who are prepared to use them to justice.”
Anyone with information is urged to call Merseyside Police’s Matrix gun crime team on 0800 230 0600 or Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
