Firefighters are continuing to tackle a blaze almost 24 hours after it broke out.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said news of the fire at a scrap metal recycling centre in Seaforth docks emerged late on Friday night.
The force confirmed that the fire was still ‘significant and ongoing’, with crews expected to remain on the scene for a ‘considerable length of time’.
Smoke billowed from the site across Merseyside throughout Saturday although it is not said to have affected residental areas or shipping.
Ben Ryder, Merseyside Fire and Rescue’s Incident Manager, said: “Crews have worked hard in arduous conditions to surround and control the fire.
“Great consideration has been taken to reduce the risk to the environment in terms of water run-off and the smoke plume.”
