Lime Street station set for nine-day closure due to revamp plans

Liverpool’s Lime Street station is set to close for nine days next year as part of a £340 million revamp.

The massive renovation is set to allow the station to accommodate double the amount of passengers by 2043, with rush bour figures set to rise from 20,000 to 40,000 in that period.

The focus of the building work will be on two new platforms, between the current platforms eight and nine, and widening others.

The building work is set to begin on September 30th 2017, and the station will close fully for nine days, and partially re-open on October 30th following the first stage of renovation.

The extension will also enable the station to handle around 19 extra trains per hour, including a new direct Liverpool to Glasgow route from 2019.

New shops, including a supermarket as well as new first and standard class lounges will also be built within the station.

Trains will stop at Liverpool South Parkway station during Lime Street’s hiatus, with passengers transferring to Merseyrail services at Central station, while a replacement bus service will also run from St Helens Central and St Helens Junction to Lime Street in the interim.
