Health bosses have discussed plans to shut Wirral’s Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge hospitals and move to a new site in Ellesmere Port.
Reports today suggest that high-level talks have taken place about the possibility of merging Wirral and Chester’s hospitals into a single unit.
NHS bosses said they have “no current plans” to merge the hospitals, site but admitted “all options” are being considered at this time.
The Liverpool Echo claims that it has seen a leaked email that describes a meeting in which senior officials discussed how the Countess of Chester, Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge hospitals could be replaced by a single unit in Ellesmere Port, some 12 miles away from Arrowe Parks current location.
An NHS England spokesman said: “We can confirm that there are no current plans to develop a single site hospital for Wirral and Cheshire, however, all options to achieve clinical and financial sustainability are being considered as part of the STP development process.
“Radical solutions may be discussed in meetings but then not included in the final Cheshire and Merseyside STP document.
“We need to do this initial work before we are in a position to formally release the STP document.”
