Liverpool One magnate Duke of Westminister passes away

Tributes have poured in following the death of Liverpool One magnate, the Duke of Westminster.

Gerard Cavendish Grosvenor passed away at the Royal Preston Hospital on Tuesday at the age of 64.

His development company Grosvenor Group were responsible for the creation of Liverpool One, which has attracted 28 million shoppers since 2008.

A number of local politicians, both past and present, have expressed their sadness at the Duke’s death as well as their gratitude for his role in the city’s growth.

Among them was Cllr Gary Millar, who hailed Britain’s third-richest man as ‘the reason we now get 28 million shoppers annually’ in a post on Twitter.

Former council leader Warren Bradley, who worked with Grosvenor on Liverpool One’s creation, paid tribute to ‘a tremendous ambassador for our city’.

In addition to his business interests, the Duke was a patron of the Friends of Williamson’s Tunnels, who were responsible for the underground excavation of the area in Edge Hill, and Autism Together, based in the Wirral.
