Lime Street’s regeneration has begun with the demolition of the Futurist cinema.
Work on dismantling the disused theatre began on Tuesday evening, just hours after the Court of Appeal ratified the planned £39 million project.
The Futurist was at the heart of a legal battle between Neptune Developments and Save Britain’s Heritage, who wanted to see it preserved.
It was Liverpool’s first purpose-built cinema when it opened in 1912 but has been inactive since its closure in 1982.
Part of Lime Street has been closed in order to undertake the demolition, with contractors expecting the Futurist to be fully torn down by Thursday.
