Joey Barton’s trial for alleged assault has been deferred until next year.

The Huyton-born former footballer was charged with Section 18 wounding with intent in March for the purported attack at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.

Barton, who has been remanded in custody since the incident, pleaded not guilty to the charge a month later alongside co-defendant Gary O’Grady.

However prosecutors dropped the case against O’Grady, 50, in June.

Ex-Manchester City and Newcastle midfielder Barton returned to Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday (September 2) ahead of his expected trial.

However Judge David Potter KC adjourned the trial until March 8, 2027 – a full 12 months since the alleged incident involving Kevin Lynch took place.

Barton wore a navy blue suit and glasses for his latest court appearance, which coincided with his 44th birthday, before being further remanded.

The trial is expected to last two weeks.
