Liverpool has been chosen as the new Northern headquarters for one of the The Royal College of Physicians.
The city beat off competition from Manchester and Leeds to host the historic institution’s first centre of excellence outside of London.
The new northern HQ will be built in the Knowledge Quarter of the city, near the old Archbishop Blanch site.
Professor Jane Dacre, president of the RCP, healing said: “Liverpool offers us impressive opportunities to enhance clinical excellence and improve patient care with the creation of RCP North.
“We have been impressed by the collaboration and professionalism offered us by the City of Liverpool and look forward to developing our partnership to develop RCP North as an asset that will benefit healthcare and patients across the country.”
Mayor Joe Anderson described it as “one of the most exciting and prestigious inward investment projects of the past decade”.
He said: “The signing up of RCP North is not just a key moment for my Knowledge Quarter Mayoral Development Zone but also for the future prosperity of Liverpool and the Northern Powerhouse as the businesses that we are targeting to join RCP North will transform the lives of thousands upon thousands of people.
“This development site is an investment opportunity of international importance and will reposition Liverpool and the North in the life sciences industry.
“It will also unlock a new commercial market with immense spin-off benefits in terms of high quality jobs and housing that will ripple right across the Liverpool city region.”
